Database Migration

Many times in my life I've been hired to design and implement legacy database migration projects. Many companies still have today old databases and applications that need to be converted, upgraded and reengineered to more updated Database Management Systems. This is either about moving relativelly small dBase, FoxPro or Paradox databases to a Microsoft Access or similar desktop database. Or migrating desktop databases to more powerfull client-server DBMSs, such as SQL-Server, Oracle, Sybase, Informix or MySQL. The migration process is not always simple, because new business rules and user interfaces are usually required, we have to deal with potential data loss and new rules of referential integrity, and legacy applications left with poor maintenance.
